How to choose your main

Jona Wagner

Have you ever wondered what agent you should play? Are you maybe not performing at the level you would expect? I can help you find the perfect agent for you playstyle!

Lurk

Do you find yourself going for the flank on attack? If you enjoy trying to get the perfect timing, you should try agents who unfold your lurk potential to the fullest.

Viper, Cypher, Killjoy and Chamber are the best suited for that. Do not lock a duelist and go lurking ever. Only for Yoru you could make a point there. But why those four agents?

Cypher, Killjoy and Chamber all have utility like bots and tripwires to hold the flank. It makes sense for them to play off of them. Viper in comparison has no information utility but her kit allows her to activate her smokes with a single button from across the map.

When lurking you should play with great patience. Listen for footsteps and other sound cues. You will also need a lot of game sense. That latter part will come by playing the role.

Entry

Are you the kind of player who just wants to go in? Then playing the entry is the best fit. You can play two types of duelists. Self-heal and movement.

Phoenix and Reyna can heal themselves and are relatively easy to understand. When playing Phoenix though, you should first invest some time into learning his flashes so you won't be the stereo-type team-blinding Phoenix.

You can also decide to play movement duelists. Mastering Neon, Raze and Yoru will take some time but especially Jett is relatively straight-forward. But don't shy away from Neon and Raze right away. In the current meta, they are the most powerful duelists and not to be overlooked.

With all of the duelists it is important to be the first one in because that is your only job. Get a kill or get traded.

Support Flashes

Kay-O, Skye and Breach are all harder to play. You need to communicate with your team when you are flashing to get the most out of your abilities. When mastered though, great flashes can turn around a whole game. So, it is worth the trouble, I'd say.

Support Intel

Sova and Fade are the other two initiators. For them too, communication is key. Timing of your reveals will make them either overpowered or useless. As the intel abilities of those two are the main parts of their kits, an early reveal means that you won't have it again for another 30 seconds.

Information is key in Valorant and if you can scout out the enemies positions effectively, you will make your team's life so much easier.

Site ancor

This role is mostly overlapping with the lurk role. Chamber, Killjoy, Cypher or Viper can all shut their site down on defense like no one else really. Viper and Killjoy both have insanely powerful mollies in combination with their kits. Cypher on the other hand, who is not that good currently, can spray down enemies when they are entrying the site with his smoke + tripwire combinations. Chamber has the ability to not only have a bot in a choke point but can also play aggressive off-angles without being tradeable.

Astra and Brimstone are capable of it too but not as well. They can combine their smokes with a molly or suck-stun. After those wear off they are pretty vulnerable though.

For playing the site ancor, your mechanics need to be sharp enough to get a kill and then move to a different position without getting picked off by multiple people. Also, you have to know your abilities. You should not have to think what utility when to use.

Smokes

Brim, Astra, Omen and Viper are the most important parts to every agent composition. Not having smokes means that you will probably loose. Viper is more niche as she need to be played in a double controller composition except on Breeze and Icebox. She is very good on Bind too though.

To play each agent effectively, you'll need map awareness and communication. Placing your smokes too early, too late or not at all means that your team is vulnerable. It takes a lot of game sense but is also a role that every ranked game needs.
